Scammers pose as Apple tech support

Scammers impersonating employees of Apple tech support scammed a Birmingham resident with a pop-up ad that showed up on her tablet’s web browser. 

The woman reported the incident to Birmingham police on Tuesday, July 28, saying that the pop-up ad told her to call an Apple support number because her web browser was locked. She said the scammers told her she needed to send Bitcoin to get her devices fixed, which she did. 

The scammers reportedly said she needed to pay additional money, but luckily, when she attempted to withdraw more, employees of her credit union realized she was being scammed.

Birmingham police say an investigation is ongoing.
