A 98-year-old Birmingham resident living in the 1000 block of Larchlea was almost scammed of $15,000 by a caller posing as a Microsoft employee.

The woman told Birmingham police officers that she called the number for computer help thinking it was Microsoft. She said a man answered her call and had her click a link to resolve the computer problem, then asked her to write over $22,000 from her bank.

She reported that the bank refused, so the man had her withdraw over $15,000 in cash. After bank personnel advised she should call the police, officers were able to return the cash to her bank safely.

Birmingham police report an investigation is ongoing.
