Suspicious envelope sent to county GOP office

Bloomfield Township police were called to the Woodward Avenue headquarters for the Oakland County Republican Party on Friday, February 20, after an enveloped was received in the mail with a powdery substance, which was later tested and ruled to be non-hazardous.

The envelope reportedly also contained a letter referencing Donald Trump.

On the following day, test results confirmed that the powdery substance was not hazardous.

The party headquarters office was closed for the weekend and party officials said it will reopen this week with even more hardened safety precautions.

Oakland Republican Party chairman Vance Patrick, in a Facebook posting, said this was not the first threat received by the headquarters. According to Patrick, the incident is just the “latest in a pattern of politically motivated harassment” directed at Republicans.

There have also been reports of similar incidents at other offices in Michigan and other states.

The Michigan Democratic Party issued a statement indicating that “political violence of any form is unacceptable.”
