A 16-year-old Detroit teen was arrested in Birmingham near Woodward Avenue and Emmons on Monday, May 16, after attempting to take control of his Uber driver’s car when his fare was denied mid-ride.

According to the report from Birmingham police, the Uber driver said he was driving the teen to his home in Detroit after dropping off the teen’s girlfriend. The teen reportedly offered the driver $100 in cash to stop at another location on the way, which the driver said he felt uncomfortable doing and decided to end the fare.

The driver alleged that the teen had left his door ajar when he got out of the car, but when the driver tried to close it, the teen entered the driver’s seat and tried to drive away. Birmingham police placed him under arrest and contacted his guardian, and they state an investigation is ongoing.
