An investigation is ongoing into the alleged theft of $166 worth of merchandise from a Birmingham grocery store located in the 600 block of E. Maple Road.

The store manager reported that he saw a man walking through the store the night of Thursday, March 19, hiding items. The man claimed that he had already paid for the items when the manager confronted him, but produced a receipt from a different store for different merchandise.

Reportedly, the man abandoned the cart, taking one of the bags with him, and left the store. Birmingham police say an investigation is ongoing.
