Two arrested for hefty retail theft in Birmingham

Two Detroit women were arrested and charged with first-degree retail fraud theft by Birmingham police on Friday, December 8, after allegedly stealing over $1,200 worth of merchandise from a store on the 100 block of South Old Woodward.

Birmingham police report that store employees called them after the store’s anti-theft sensors went off when the two suspects carrying bags left the building. Police tracked the two down, finding one in a car stuck in traffic outside the store on northbound Old Woodward and the other was caught running down southbound Old Woodward.

Reportedly, police saw items with the store’s price tags and security tags in the back seat of the car. Both women were also wearing layers of the items under their jackets.

When employees scanned the tags, they confirmed the items had been stolen, according to police.

Both the women were arrested and charged.
