Woman caught fleeing after retail theft

A Detroit woman was apprehended in Birmingham on Saturday, October 17, after allegedly committing first-degree retail fraud at a store in the 100 block of S. Old Woodward.
Birmingham police reported that they were called for a retail theft in progress and arrived to see the woman leaving the store with over 30 items of clothing and merchandise, valued at about $3,880, eventually catching her down the street and placing her under arrest.
Police said they discovered the woman had several prior arrests and investigations for alleged retail fraud and larceny, including a 2025 arrest for a similar incident at the same retailer.
On top of the charges for first-degree retail fraud, the woman was also charged with obstructing justice for giving a false name to police.
The name of involved local businesses are seldom provided by Birmingham police.
