Woman out $54,000 in email, telephone scam

On Friday, July 19, around 12:30 p.m., a 67-year-old Birmingham woman reported to police she had been the victim of an email scam.

The woman came into the Birmingham Police Department lobby to make the report that included her calling a telephone number from a fraudulent email purporting to be from PayPal. She informed police she had provided her checking account information and transferred more than $54,000 to an out of state account.

Birmingham police said an investigation is ongoing.
