A Birmingham woman was scammed out of approximately $975 at the end of April after the scammer, pretending to be an Xfinity employee, tricked the resident with the potential for a cheaper monthly rate.

According to the woman, the poser called her and offered the cheaper rate if she sent three Target gift cards worth $325 each. After sending the man the gift cards, she realized that it was likely a scam, Birmingham police reported.

An investigation is ongoing, police said.
