Woman scammed through computer ‘hack’

After her computer froze on a pop-up screen, a Birmingham resident was scammed out of $10,000 worth of Bitcoin on Tuesday, February 27, by someone who she alleged she called to help fix her computer.

The victim went to the Birmingham Police Department after sending the scammer money to file a report about the incident. According to the report, she claims that the pop-up screen on her computer showed her a phone number to call for help with fixing the computer.

She then reported that the scammer told the victim to send her the Bitcoin which she did, and she discovered she was out the $10,000.

Birmingham police report an investigation is ongoing.
