A man with an apparent disdain for potted plants was cited for trespassing on Monday, July 12, after allegedly breaking several of them at a Birmingham Kroger. Officers were dispatched about 1:13 a.m. to Kroger, 700 E. Maple, for the report of a man taking items from the store. Officers said the man, 54, from Lapeer, was near the entry holding a potted plant. When asked to stop, he started running, then stopped near the parking lot and threw the plant on the ground. A patio umbrella was discovered stolen Thursday, July 8, from the 300 block of Linden, Birmingham police said. Officers said the victim, a 73-year-old resident, told them the umbrella was delivered sometime on July 8 when she was away from the home. She returned later that day and found the box ripped open and empty. Birmingham police are investigating.
Birmingham City Commissioner Stuart Sherman, first elected to the commission in 2005, has announced that he will not be seeking another four-year term in the November 2 election this year.
