Cyclist tries to steal pricey sunglasses from store

A man who had stolen a $500 pair of sunglasses from Shades Optical in Birmingham on Wednesday, August 15, took off on a bicycle and dropped two more pairs of shades.

Birmingham police were dispatched to the store, located at 200 W. Maple Road in downtown Birmingham, just after the attempted retail fraud incident occurred around 4 p.m. Employees told officers they saw a man take a pair of $500 sunglasses and put them in his shorts under his waistband. An employee asked him to give the glasses back, and the man responded that he didn't take the glasses.

The suspect then quickly left the store and fled the scene on a bicycle.

The employees said that as he was getting on his bike, he dropped two pairs of sunglasses he had stolen from the store.

The man is described as a tall white male, in his mid-50s, wearing a white shirt, black shorts and a U.S. military camouflage hat.

Birmingham police are investigating.
