Check fraud costs Birmingham woman thousands

A resident living in the 1000 block of Shirley in Birmingham found several checks missing from her checkbook and suspicious activity in her bank accounts on Thursday, May 25, leading her to close her account and lock her credit.

According to the victim, two checks totaling $11,000 were cashed from her account and endorsed in someone else’s handwriting. She also noticed that a $50,000 transfer was made by someone from her savings account to her checking account.

In addition, someone also attempted an external wire transfer from her account for $10,000.

The victim told police that she closed her checking account and will be putting a lock on her credit.

Birmingham police report an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
