Judge denies ex parte TRO in city lawsuit

The Oakland Circuit Court Judge now assigned the case involving a lawsuit by the city of Birmingham to prevent the sale of The Community House (TCH) issued a denial this week of the city’s request for an ex parte temporary restraining order (TRO) and injunctive relief to keep the building at 380 Bates Street in the downtown area as a community center.

Mobil gas station approved to sell alcohol

The Mobil gas station at 43003 Woodward Ave. is one step closer to becoming the second gas station in Bloomfield Township to sell beer, wine and liquor after a vote of approval from the Bloomfield Township Board of Trustees on Monday, December 8.

RCOC awards additional $500,000 to SAD

The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) on Wednesday, December 3, confirmed it would be awarding the Bloomfield Village Green Phase Special Assessment District (SAD) an additional $500,000.

Stolen Lincoln Navigator recovered in Detroit

Bloomfield Township Police on Friday, December 5, at 7 a.m. took a report of a stolen vehicle in the 2800 block of Chestnut Run Drive.

Police search for stolen car from Birmingham

Birmingham police are investigating an alleged car theft that took place the night between Saturday, November 29, and Sunday, November 30, on the 500 block of S Glenhurst.

Teen caught avoiding parking garage payment

While near the exit to the Peabody Street parking garage in Birmingham on Wednesday, November 26, a city police officer saw a 19-year-old from Warren tail his friend’s car closely to avoid paying the ticket fee for the garage.

Drunk man takes swing at security guard

A man from Montreal, Quebec, was cited for disorderly conduct in Birmingham the night of Friday, November 28, after he allegedly took a swing at a security guard.

Eight vehicles targeted by thieves overnight

The Bloomfield Township Police Department took five reports of larceny from automobiles throughout the township from December 4 through December 5.

Nike jacket stolen from residential mailbox

A package was stolen from a residential mailbox in the 600 block of Wilshire Drive in Bloomfield Township on Saturday, December 6.

Bag of baseball equipment goes missing

Over $1,600 worth of baseball equipment was reportedly stolen from a Birmingham resident’s car sometime between Monday, November 17, and Monday, November 24, while it was parked in the driveway of her home on the 1200 block of Shipman Blvd.

Dick’s Sporting Goods hit again with retail theft

Dick’s Sporting Goods, located at 2105 S. Telegraph Road in Bloomfield Township, was hit with a retail theft on Friday, December 5.

Collapse of cannabis industry

The new American Gold Rush – cannabis. The Wild West arrived in the Midwest through cannabis sales, with Michigan leading the way in legalizing recreational use in 2018. A decade earlier, medicinal use had been legalized in November 2008, and by 2019, there were approximately 450 medical provisioning centers, serving 283,000 registered patients – one of the largest in the United States. The number of licensed facilities for growing, processing, and compliance for the medical market was in the hundreds as well. In October of 2019, Michigan began accepting applications for its first recreational marijuana businesses, with sales beginning on December 1, 2019. The initial licenses were awarded in November 2019, primarily to existing medical license holders who could meet the conversion criteria. By the end of 2019 and into early January 2020, there were 27 active adult-use licenses across the state.

GROWING FIELD

When U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens announced for the U.S. Senate this year, and state Senator Jeremy Moss (D-Southfield) announced for her House seat, some political observers speculated that his entry into the Democratic primary would not necessarily clear the field of other contenders but would limit the number of candidates for this congressional district that includes most of Oakland County. Lots of luck with that theory.
