Local minister scammed by congregation poser
A local Birmingham minister was scammed out of roughly $600 after someone posing as a person affiliated with the church texted him asking for money. The minister told Birmingham police that on Saturday, March 7, he got a text message asking him to purchase six $100 Apple gift cards for people in the hospital. Pair nabbed after theft of items at Target
The Bloomfield Township Police Department on Monday, March 9, responded to Target, located at 2400 S. Telegraph Road, for a retail fraud that just occurred and shortly after arrested two suspects. A 98-year-old Birmingham resident living in the 1000 block of Larchlea was almost scammed of $15,000 by a caller posing as a Microsoft employee. The woman told Birmingham police officers that she called the number for computer help thinking it was Microsoft. She said a man answered her call and had her click a link to resolve the computer problem, then asked her to write over $22,000 from her bank.
